Our team, design for construction of a physical fitness center at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, designed for LEED Platinum certification with incorporated AT/FP design and Low Impact Development Design. The 103,484 SF Fitness Center at the Wallace Creek Regimental Complex was designed as the first targeted USGBC LEED Platinum building on base. Besides providing a wide array of facilities for exercise activities, the building will serve as a FEMA 361 compliant Destructive Weather Shelter, given Camp Lejeune’s proximity to the Atlantic coast and hurricane considerations. The facility includes a 50m indoor competition pool, an indoor running track, a gymnasium with basketball/volleyball courts and spectator seating, racquetball courts, unit physical training/group exercise room, aerobic/exercise area, cardiovascular training area, and a weight training/body development area. Space is also provided for an equipment storage/gear issue area, an administration area including private staff offices, a fitness assessment room, a laundry facility, a vending area, and separate men’s, women’s, and family locker areas with showers, toilets, and saunas. Program areas are organized around a primary gathering area, linking the fitness spaces and facilitating movement while allowing staff clear views into many areas of the facility. All interior areas use long-wear materials and abuse-resistant finishes to meet the high durability and finish quality standards of the base. The facility includes a full natatorium with dedicated dehumidification systems designed to manage environmental conditions and evaporation of pool water. Carefully planned phasing allowed the existing facility to remain fully operational while the new, state-of-the art facility was under construction.
