Stratus is currently engaged in a multi-year, $16 million design-build project to modify and upgrade the jet fuel storage and distribution system located at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. This project will upgrade the existing fuel farm and hydrant distribution system that was originally built in 1984 to serve Concourse “A” and then expanded in 1995 to support the addition of Concourses “B” and “C.” The project scope is extensive and carefully phased/coordinated with the fuel farm operator to maintain fueling system function throughout the proposed upgrade of the systems.
Stratus has successfully developed a high-functioning design-build team of designers, construction professionals, and specialty trades to complete a variety of design-build scope including: hydrant fuel pump upgrades (mechanical & electrical), filter vessel replacement/upgrades, bulk storage tank rehabilitation, and stormwater management upgrades including oil/water separator design/installation. The success of this project has revolved around a well-developed project plan and approach early in the process as well as effective use of project management and control tools throughout to manage budget, change, schedule, quality, and safety.
The project is being developed in seven phases:
Phase 1
- Hydrant Pumping System: Variable-Frequency Motor Option
- Control System
Phase 2
- Pipeline Receipt Filtration Pad
- Four-Position Truck Unloading Rack
- Truck Unloading/Loading Filtration Pad
- Bulk Storage Tanks 1, 2, and 3
- Elevated Central Pipe and Electrical/Controls Duct Bank Rack
- Two-Position Truck Loading Rack
Phase 3
- Site Modifications
- Control Building Renovations
- New Storage, Maintenance Shop, and Garage Building
Phase 4
- Emergency Fuel Shutoff (EFSO)
- Hydrant Distribution System
Phase 5
- Fuel farm expansion to include design-build delivery of additional 40,000-barrel Jet-A fuel tank
Phase 6
- The addition of a fifth Jet-A storage tank (Tank No. 5)
- Final touchup of the Fuel Farm and Hydrant Distribution System
Phase 7
- Install provisions for future tanks 6 & 7, to the extent that no future earthwork will be required when the time comes for the installation of the future tanks.
